In the nested HSV-1 DNA PCR 102 of template copies could be detected, in the HSV-2 DNA PCR 102 copies, and in the nested VZV DNA PCR 102 of template copies could be detected. The majority of adults have seropositivity to HSV-1, and studies using the more sensitive PCR assay suggest that nearly all adults are latently infected in sensory neurons [16].

Twenty-five nanograms DNA or control water only was mixed in TaqMan PCR Master Mix (Applied Biosystems, Thermo Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA) with an HSV-1 glycoprotein H (gH)-specific primer.
